What’s Phroth all about, anyway? Check out this promo video:
So you think you’ve got what it takes to be a member of Phroth? It’s easy to get involved. Join us in 233 HUB at 6 p.m. on any given Monday. We love when newbies come to our meetings; it allows us to continue to grow. You can even come to a few meetings before deciding to become a real member.
You’re not available on Monday nights? That’s cool. Just shoot us an email and let us know who you are. We’ll work something out. We regularly have department-specific meetings on other days of the week, so it’s easy to fit Phroth into your schedule.
A lot of people think funny writers are all we want. Not true. Running a magazine calls for all sorts of people. Read about our needs below. If none interest you, come to a meeting anyway. We think we’re pretty fun to hang out with.
We need ambitious people to fill positions on the following staffs: writing, art and design, business, marketing and publicity, and THON.
Writing
Phroth doesn’t write itself. And contrary to popular belief, nor do teams of highly-trained monkeys. (But do contact us if you have trained monkeys to sell). This is where you come in. We need people to bring the funny. No experience is necessary, but we really go nuts over people who like to satirize things. Don’t think you’re funny? That’s OK. If you can spell and form basic sentences, you can help us by pointing out where we’ve failed at one (or both) by marking it all with a big red pen. We’ll love you just as much, if not more.
Art & Design
Writing not your thing? Were you aware that many Phroth members haven’t picked up a pen in their lives? We’re not sure how they got to college, but we’re glad they’re here anyway. The things written by the not-monkeys have to get into print somehow. This staff makes it happen. Phroth is always looking for people who like to draw
things, design pages or use Photoshop to create ironic scenes in which bananas slip on people.
Business
We think it was Destiny’s Child that once said “Can you pay my bills?” Phroth’s business staff makes sure what little money we do have makes its way into other people’s pockets. From paying our publisher to reimbursing members and communicating with PSU organizations like
UPAC and ASA, Phroth’s business team makes sure the magazine is run more effectively than Enron. The staff is also responsible for selling advertising space in our publications.
Marketing & Publicity
One of Phroth’s major goals each year is to increase awareness and readership. If you’re interested in public relations, marketing, advertising or just helping your favorite magazine grow in popularity, this staff is for you. From coordinating and performing publicity stunts to flyering campus and distributing magazines, joining this staff is the perfect way to practice your viral marketing skills. HALLS!
THON
If you’re looking for a way to become involved with THON without jumping through a lot of hoops, this is it. Phroth participates in the Penn State Dance Marathon annually, raising money and sending two dancers to the event. We need people who are interested in dancing, coordinating Phroth’s Thon-related activities or simply helping to raise money. We’re serious about making jokes, but helping sick kids is something we take just as seriously.
